NEW YORK (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks selected Asa Newell with the 23rd pick in the first round of the NBA Draft this past Wednesday.
Newell played basketball for the University of Georgia, entering the draft after only one year of collegiate play. In 33 games, Newell averaged 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, one steal, and one block on 54% field goal percentage.
Newell is a Georgia native. He was born in Atlanta but grew up in Athens. He attended Monteverde Academy in Florida, where he went 33-0 in his senior year and won the Chipotle National Championship.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity and super blessed to be here,” Newell said. “Growing up down the road in Athens, growing up as a Hawks fan, it feels like a dream come true. I feel like I’m in a Disney movie.”
Newell is the first draft pick under the new General Manager, Onsi Saleh. Saleh was promoted to GM on April 21st, 2025. He was previously the Assistant General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks.
